Between —, the number of attendees was around 85, 75, of whom were paying visitors. Inthe festival was scheduled to take place from 30 July to 1 August, but was canceled due to a ban on large public events in Germany due to the COVID pandemic. Both lived in Wacken and were friends, Jensen played the electric bass with Rock cover band Skyline. Skyline was one of the first regional Metal and Rock cover bands at that time. The band was regionally known, working its way from appearances in village pubs and gigs at biker meetings up to an appearance as supporting band of " Extrabreit ".

Until then, the pit had already served as a meeting venue for up to 3, members of biker club 'No Mercys', it was therefore perfectly suited for their plans and also presented an opportunity to attract motorcycle fans. From the beginning, it was clear that the focus of the event would be on Rock and Metal and that, in contrast to other single-day festivals such as Monsters of Rock or Super Rock in Mannheimthere would also be camping grounds. The first two-day festival took place in the gravel pit on 24 and 25 August and barely had visitors.

The first festivals were organised privately, with the technology being built on a trailer borrowed from a local trucking company and the stage being a DIY construction. In subsequent years, too, most of the tasks were carried out by the small team. Inthe programme changed to include internationally renowned bands such as Blind Guardian and Saxon for the first time, [9] [3] and the number of bands rose to 26, listing bands from Swedenthe USAIrelandand Belgium.

The additional post-concert costs for garbage disposal on the campground, where 2, paying guests and many more were present and celebrated, as well as the significantly oversized security, among other things, meant that the organisers recorded a loss of around 25, D-Mark that year.

With the reunion of the band Fates Warning at the festival inWacken Open Air had a special feature and also made a name for itself in the following years with unusual band constellations and reunions. At the same time, Doro Pesch and other well-known bands made for interesting appearances, which resulted in a new record attendance of 3, paying customers.

25 years louder than hell

On its fifth anniversary inthe financial situation stabilised and the festival finally broke even. The line-up remained professional and featured many internationally known bands from the Metal scene. A total of 4, tickets were sold; on top of that, due to the rising costs of garbage disposal, tickets for the camping grounds had to be purchased separately, and pre-orders were rewarded with a free T-shirt.

But even with roughly 5, attendees, the festival didn't turn a profit. Ticket sales for the festival again started sluggishly, despite a headliner like Kreator and numerous internationally renowned bands such as The ExploitedGorefestand Crematory. The engagement of the controversial band also led to criticism, and some bands cancelled their gig in Wacken that year.

As a result of many visitors flooding the village inthe inhabitants of Wacken voiced their concern over an event of this size being held in the local gravel pit. Uwe Trede offered to relocate the festival site to his own property and the areas previously used as campgrounds and took care of the acquisition of additional land.

Louder Than Hell is an examination of that cultural phenomenon and the much-maligned genre of music that has stood the test of time. Louder than Hell features more than interviews with some of the biggest bands in metal, including Black Sabbath, Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Slayer, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Spinal Tap, Pantera, White Zombie, Slipknot, and Twisted Sister; insights from industry insiders, family members, friends, scenesters, groupies, and journalists; and 48 pages of full-color photographs.

Compiled from over interviews conducted by the long-time music journalists Wiederhorn and Turman over the past 25 years, this work conveys the history of heavy metal through the words of the men and women who created it, played it, re-invented it, and continue to carry the torch for this much-loved and much-maligned subgenre of rock 'n' roll.

Bookended by an introduction by Anthrax's Scott Ian and an afterword by Judas Priest's Rob Halford, metal's lifespan is broken up into chapters that tell the story of metal in chronological order, basically starting with Black Sabbath's formation in the late '60s to the death of Slipknot's Paul Gray in For those looking for all the classic touchstone moments of heavy metal, they are here, including Ronnie James Dio perfecting the metal "devil horns," Ozzy Osbourne biting the head off a bat, the debauchery of the L.

But the authors dig deeper into the other hard rock related stories, like black metal death that included Norwegian Count Grishnackh murdering fellow countryman and musician Euronymous, and the Swedish frontman of the band Dissection Jon N dtveidt "helping to kill" a gay man in Color photos not seen by PW. I enjoyed this book. It provided a good overall narration of the history of this genre that I love.

It wasn't perfect however, and could have been better. I thought the authors spent way too much time on Metalcore, and Crossover. I understand they're part of the story, but I believe they're not as important as other genres and, are part of the problem with mainstream metal today. They've become too formulaic and the music is boring.

25 Years Louder Than Hell: The W. O. A Documentary

But I digress. Not enough time was spent on early and pre metal and not enough important bands from those eras were mentioned. Also completely missing from this book, is grunge.

Regardless of what people think about the music and the bands it is part of the story of heavy music, period. Almost all of those bands, especially the popular ones, had heavy elements of metal. The only thing mentioned about grunge was that it killed metal in the 90s. Grunge label given by critics helped bring metal back to its roots.

25 years louder than hell

At the same time it helped heavy music evolve into the next century. Good and bad mostly bad with all the cheap knockoff post grunge bands.

Wacken Open Air

Grunge's influence is still felt throughout today's popular, heavy music. All in all it's a good book for an overview and newcomers to the genre will learn a few things.

Really good book to read if your interested in heavy metal and all it's different subgenres. Really goes into detail. Publisher Description.
